Over the past two days California has been experiencing a lot of seismic activity.  Yesterday at about 4:27 p.m. PST a 6.5 magnitude quake struck offshore in Northern California approximately 30 miles from the cities of Ferndale and Eureka.  This massive quake was felt in Northern California, Nevada, and in Oregon.  Fortunately, this quake caused no injuries or death and only minor damage.  Since that quake there have been hundreds of measurable aftershocks in the vicinity of the large quake.  Further, there was 4.1 quake on the Mexican border at 10:35 p.m. PST which was felt to be an aftershock of the magnitude 5.9 quake that hit a few weeks ago on December 30th.  So what does all this shaking mean for the United States and the State of California.  One can only speculate that it is a precursor to an even bigger quake or that it is the earth letting off pressure in areas of well know and active faults.  Whatever the case it is a reminder to Californians to always be prepared for emergencies whether they be from earthquakes, fire, mudslides, floods, and even tsunamis!

We hope you all had a great and safe New Year. We sure did.

A few months after a contract dispute took place, Fox & Time Warner Cable finally make deal to keep Fox, Fox News, and any other Fox Network on the air. News Corp. also made a deal to keep Fox going through their Network. Many people where concerned about Fox being taking off their selection of channels. People didn’t want to miss their shows on Fox, as well as the bowl games, and even the News Network. The deadline came and gone but no deal was made. The deal time was then extended into today, where they got a deal done. Fox wanted a certain amount a money paid to them per subscriber, but Time Warner and News Corp. discouraged that.

Both companies and Fox were both happy with the deal that was made, spokemans said from each company. If you’re an American, would of this mattered or affected you? Comment below.

Merry Christmas – from Big World Central. Just has we did with Thanksgiving, we will give you some interesting facts that you might not know about the holiday of Christmas.

a) When did people start decorating their trees?

Decorated Christmas trees in homes date to 1605 in Germany.

But the first American patent for a Christmas tree stand was not issued until 1876, and stands didn’t hold water until 1899.

The first electric Christmas tree lights were sold by General Electric in 1903. So strands have been tangled for more than a century.

b) Where did the Songs “Jingle Bell” originate?

There was a little confusion in holiday celebrations at first. For example, the Christmas carol “Jingle Bells” was composed in 1857 as a song to help celebrate a Thanksgiving celebration in a Boston Sunday school class. Supposedly, it was so popular that it was sung again on Christmas.

c) Here our the ten best movies of all time in no particular order;

10. In no particular order, here are – one man’s opinion – the 10 best Christmas movies of all time: “A Charlie Brown’s Christmas” (1965), “A Christmas Carol” (1951); “Dr. Suess: How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” (1966), “Home Alone” (1990), “It’s a Wonderful Life” (1946), “The Miracle on 34th Street” (1947), “A Christmas Story” (1983), “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” (1989), “The Santa Claus” (1994), and “White Christmas” (1954).

d) Here are some interesting facts on Reindeer:

* There are about 5 million reindeer in the world.

* Santa’s ninth reindeer was originally named Rollo – and then Reginald – before Robert L. May decided on Rudolph in his 1939 song.

* “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” is the second best selling carol after “White Christmas.” (You know you were wondering.)

e) Which famous people were born on this holiday?

Notable individuals who were born on Christmas include Pope Pius VI (1717), Humphrey Bogart (1899), Cab Calloway (1907), Anwar Sadat (1918), Sissy Spacek (1949), and Dido Florian Cloud de Bounevialle Armstrong, aka Dido (1971). People who died on Christmas include W.C. Fields (1946), Charlie Chaplin (1977), Dean Martin (1995) and James Brown (2006).

We hope you liked our Christmas edition of interesting facts. Have a happy holiday!

The Economy – Is it or isn’t it getting better? December 14, 2009

Even President Obama’s economic advisors and White House staff can’t seem to agree.  While top White House economic advisor Larry Summers says that key indicators show that the economy is expanding, others seemingly disagree.  In fact, on Thursday Tim Geithner said that the TARP program could face “big financial losses” and just today the Senate sent yet another $1.1 billion stimulus package to Obama’s desk.  Why would a country with an expanding economy require yet another stimulus package?  We expect that the funds from the newest package, the one President Obama is sure to sign, will become as uncollectible and wrought with fraud as the others leaving our country in yet more economic dire straights.  By the way, the more than 1,000 page stimulus bill was finished and delivered to lawmakers late in the week and voted on this morning – do you think that anyone read the entire bill?

What do you think?  How are you doing economically?  In your area are things improving?  We at Big World Central would like to know of positive (and negative) signs of economic recovery.

United Airlines Flight 227 – A dry run? December 12, 2009

Have you heard?  Did you know?  Did the mainstream media report this?

On Wednesday, December 9th, a United Airlines flight from Denver to Los Angeles was interrupted by a group of men who were acting strangely.  Apparently, the flight crew felt uncomfortable with a group of travelers who appeared to be of middle eastern descent.  Airline personnel are trained to recognize signs such as the way a ticket is paid for, whether the flight is one-way, how a group will seat themselves on the plane, and how they get up to use the restroom.  After the group was removed from the plane a bomb-sniffing dog was brought in.  Passengers say that they never have seen a flight crew “so scared” in their lives.  This incident was strikingly similar to another incident that happened on November 17th on AirTran flight 297.  It is not unusual for terrorists to participate in “dry runs” before an attack to measure and test reactions and security.  Might this be a prelude to what may be coming?

Russian Nightclub Explosion; kills over 100 December 6, 2009

A nightclub explosion kills over 100 and leaves 130 critically hurt. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Saturday demanded the “fire code” policy to be more heavily enforced. He also called for Monday to be a day of mourning. The fire was started after the careless nightclub owners didn’t listen to authorities about the fire hazard that they were trying to produce; they started the fire. Many people were trampled, as everyone went for one exit. There were two exits, but the owners didn’t tell anyone about the second exit. The owners were fined twice previously for similar offences but continued their hazardous activity.

Amatuer video shows that the fire quickly spread as it burned the roof. This created panic, which led to so many deaths.

A similar fire started in 2003 in Rhode Island. It had a similar effect, burning the roof and creating panic between the people. That nightclub fire killed 100 people.

Big World Central sends its condolences to the families involved.  We think that there needs to be a stricter inspection policy in nightclubs all over the world so it prevents this from happening .

First and foremost – Big World Central would like to say Happy Thanksgiving to all. We hope you stay safe, and have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a day for getting together with your family and giving a day of thanks. The holiday ‘Thanksgiving’ is only celebrated in the United States and Canada. Canada’s thanksgiving comes before the United States. The first occurrence of Thanksgiving in the United States happened on Plymouth rock in 1621. The Plymouth celebration was a tradition throughout the 13 colonies. This was a very important holiday for all Americans by the 1800’s. In Canada it is celebrated on the second Monday in October and in the United States it is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November.

Here are some interesting facts on Thanksgiving;

a) It was not until 1941 that congress declared Thanksgiving as a national holiday. It was declared to be held on the fourth Thursday in November.

b) The first known thanksgiving feast or festival in North America was celebrated by Francisco Vásquez de Coronado and the people he called “Tejas” (members of the Hasinai group of Caddo-speaking Native Americans).

c) Fossil evidence shows that turkeys roamed the Americas 10 million years ago.

d) 91% of Americans eat turkey on Thanksgiving Day.

e) Thomas Jefferson thought the concept of Thanksgiving was “the most ridiculous idea I’ve ever heard.”

And with that, once again we hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving if you are celebrating it. Don’t get too stuffed on the Turkey!

When religion and politics clash! November 24, 2009

Today the Catholic Church issued an order to Senator Patrick Kennedy to skip communion due to his stance on abortion.  He is in essence on restriction from receiving the Eucharist for the past

three years.  The platform of the Catholic Church has always been the preservation of life.  Not only is the church anti-abortion but it is also anti-death penalty.  The church has consistently remained committed to these positions.

Senator Patrick Kennedy, the son of Ted Kennedy, is a lifelong Catholic (as all the Kennedy clan are).  In addition to being Catholic the Kennedy’s are lifelong members of the Democratic Party.  A party that advances a platform that includes the right to abortion.  As recent as last weekend, the Democrats moved forward its healthcare bill which includes provisions for abortion in its Government run healthcare plan.  Kennedy voted for the Senate bill.

Bishop Thomas Tobin wrote Kennedy in 2007 asking him to refrain from receiving communion.  In his letter Bishop Tobin stated:

“If a Catholic in his or her personal or professional life were knowingly and obstinately to repudiate her definite teachings on moral issues, he or she would seriously diminish his or her communion with the Church. Reception of Holy Communion in such a situation would not accord with the nature of the Eucharistic celebration, so that he or she should refrain.”

The request was in accord with the then recent statement issued by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Bishop Tobin is displeased that Kennedy would make this private matter public.  He has issued a statement that can be read here:  http://tinyurl.com/ybmywm3

Is Senator Kennedy wrong for going against the teachings of his faith in order to appease the platform of his political party?  Is Bishop Tobin wrong for asking that Senator Kennedy not take the Eucharist since he is not abiding to his faith.  Is Senator Kennedy wrong for making this issue public?  Is Bishop Tobin wrong for being upset with Kennedy for releasing this issue to the media?  Tell us what you think.

Anchor Lou Dobbs departs from CNN November 12, 2009

Long time CNN anchor Lou Dobbs leaves CNN for quote on quote “other opportunity’s.” He officially left after broadcasting  his show “Lou Dobbs Tonight” and releasing a 2 minute statement.  Here is some of what he said as his departing statement;

“Tonight, I want to turn to a personal note if I may and address a matter that has raised some curiosity.

This will be my last broadcast here on CNN, where I have worked for most of the past 30 years and where I have many friends and colleagues whom I admire deeply and respect greatly.

I’m the last of the original anchors here on CNN, and I’m proud to have had the privilege of helping to build the world’s first news network. I am grateful for the many opportunities that CNN has given me over these many years, I’ve tried to reciprocate with the full measure of my ability and my energy.

Over the past six months, it’s become increasingly clear that strong winds of change have begun buffeting this country and affecting all of us. And some leaders in media, politics and business have been urging me to go beyond the role here at CNN and to engage in constructive problem-solving, as well as to contribute positively to a better understanding of the great issues of our day. And to continue to do so in the most honest and direct language possible.

I’ve talked extensively with Jonathan Klein; Jon’s the president of CNN, and as a result of those talks, Jon and I have agreed to a release from my contract that will enable me to pursue new opportunities.”

You can read more of his statement, here.

Lou Dobbs signed on with CNN in the early 1980s and was a successful business man, and his ratings went through the roof for many years. After 2001, things began to change has he became very opinionated on some things. This caused him to make many enemies, and his ratings spiked during this time. He then began to get complaints from immigration groups after opposing illegal immigrants, calling for CNN to fire Lou Dobbs. Dobbs, now 64, says this has been going on behind the scenes for months, and today was the right time to go.

Now, BWC asks, where will he go next? Rumors sprang up a few months back about him joining the Fox lineup, and becoming an anchor, these rumors where false but now that he has been cut loose, will he? Or will he do something else? We will stay on the story.

Jason Rodriguez, seen in the picture above, is responsible for killing 1 and injuring 5 others after going into a former place of employment where he went on a shooting rampage. He is now being held without bond and is being charged with first degree murder. Orange Country Police department has put this man under suicide watch, as they think he may commit suicide at any point in time.

His family isn’t taken it well, as they have released a statement saying they are very sorry and sent condolences out to the families that were hurt in this tragic shooting. His lawyer is calling him extremely mentally ill after going through unemployment, foreclosure, bankruptcy, and divorce. His problems shouldn’t have come at the expense of other people’s lives.

One major question that BWC is asking – did the Fort Hood shootings influence this man to go and take his grievances out on other people? Remember, this shooting happened a day after the Fort Hood shooting that left 13 dead and about 38 injured. Though reports haven’t come out, and it is unlikely that he will ever admit it, it may be that the Fort Hood shootings influenced him to carry out a similar crime in Orlando. This is absolutely horrible and our condolences go out to the families of this horrific crime.

He may face a death sentence if he is found competent to stand trial and is found guilty. If you want anymore information..go to this link.
