Shake, Rattle, and Roll – Earthquakes! January 11, 2010

Over the past two days California has been experiencing a lot of seismic activity.  Yesterday at about 4:27 p.m. PST a 6.5 magnitude quake struck offshore in Northern California approximately 30 miles from the cities of Ferndale and Eureka.  This massive quake was felt in Northern California, Nevada, and in Oregon.  Fortunately, this quake caused no injuries or death and only minor damage.  Since that quake there have been hundreds of measurable aftershocks in the vicinity of the large quake.  Further, there was 4.1 quake on the Mexican border at 10:35 p.m. PST which was felt to be an aftershock of the magnitude 5.9 quake that hit a few weeks ago on December 30th.  So what does all this shaking mean for the United States and the State of California.  One can only speculate that it is a precursor to an even bigger quake or that it is the earth letting off pressure in areas of well know and active faults.  Whatever the case it is a reminder to Californians to always be prepared for emergencies whether they be from earthquakes, fire, mudslides, floods, and even tsunamis!

United Airlines Flight 227 – A dry run? December 12, 2009

Have you heard?  Did you know?  Did the mainstream media report this?

On Wednesday, December 9th, a United Airlines flight from Denver to Los Angeles was interrupted by a group of men who were acting strangely.  Apparently, the flight crew felt uncomfortable with a group of travelers who appeared to be of middle eastern descent.  Airline personnel are trained to recognize signs such as the way a ticket is paid for, whether the flight is one-way, how a group will seat themselves on the plane, and how they get up to use the restroom.  After the group was removed from the plane a bomb-sniffing dog was brought in.  Passengers say that they never have seen a flight crew “so scared” in their lives.  This incident was strikingly similar to another incident that happened on November 17th on AirTran flight 297.  It is not unusual for terrorists to participate in “dry runs” before an attack to measure and test reactions and security.  Might this be a prelude to what may be coming?

Clash of cultures leads to death of young woman. November 4, 2009

20-year-old Noor Almaleki died two weeks after being run down by her own father.  Her father, Faleh Almaleki, is being held after attempting to enter Great Britain; he was sent back to the U.S. after they denied his entrance there.  Mr. Almaleki felt that his daughter had become too “westernized” and had fallen away from her Muslim upbringing.  He felt that his daughter’s actions had brought shame to his family because she had married someone in Iraq but fled back to Arizona to live with her boyfriend and his mother (the boyfriend’s mother was also run down by Almaleki’s jeep but will survive).  Mr. Almaleki felt justified by what he did because in his culture such actions, known as “honor killings” are accepted.

What do you think?  Should these types of “honor killings” be tolerated and accepted based upon the person’s religious culture and upbringing?  Is this case relevant in considering whether the Ohio teenager, who ran away from her Muslim family because she converted to Christianity, should be returned to her family?  We would enjoy your comments.

The fight for the life of a child … November 2, 2009

This fight is going on in Britain where the father of a one-year-old is literally fighting for the life of his son.  The baby, “RB”, has a genetic condition called myasthenic syndrome which causes a disconnect between the nerves and the muscles; this affects the baby’s limbs and breathing.  The baby has been in the hospital since birth and has been on a ventilator.  Unfortunately, the mother and father are separated and they are not united in the fight to keep their son alive.  The mother sides with the hospital who want to remove the life support from the baby.

According to the father, the child’s mental capacity isn’t diminished.  The baby can see, hear, feel, recognize his parents and play with toys.  The father believes that his son has life quality despite the fact that the hospital says that he doesn’t.  If the court should rule with the hospital and the mother, it will be the first time that the court has gone against the wishes of a parent in deciding life or death.

What an extremely difficult situation.  Who would you side with father or mother and hospital?  Are outside forces influencing the wishes of the hospital such as the socialized medicine regimen enjoyed by Britain vs. the cost of keeping this baby on a ventilator?  We would like your comments.

clinton

Thousands of ethnic Albanians dared low temperatures and a bitter wind in Kosovo’s capital Pristina to greet former President Bill Clinton on Sunday as he appeared at the unveiling of an 11-foot statue of himself on a key boulevard that also bears his name. Clinton is thought of as a hero by Kosovo’s ethnic Albanian majority for launching NATO’s bombing campaign against Yugoslavia in the year 1999 that put an end to the brutal Serb forces’ crackdown on independence-seeking ethnic Albanians. Many waved American, Albanian and Kosovo flags and recited “USA!” as the retired president escalated on top of a podium with his own poster in the background saying “Kosovo honors a hero.” Some glanced out of balconies and leaned on window sills to get an even better view of Clinton from their apartment blocks. The statue is distributed on top of a white-tiled base, in the center of an insignificant square, outlined by communist-era buildings.

Clinton also discussed Kosovo’s 120-seat assembly, strengthening them to reprieve and move on from the assault of the past. The statue portrays Clinton with his left arm held high and grasping a portfolio bearing his name and the date when NATO began bombing Yugoslavia, on March. 24, 1999. A supposed 10,000 ethnic Albanians were killed during the Kosovo crackdown and about 800,000 were forced out of their own homes. They returned home after NATO-led peacekeepers moved in following 78 straight days of bombing. Want to read more about this story? Click here.

I think this is a very interesting story. It’s good that the ethnic Albanians look at Bill Clinton as a hero now. What do you think about this? We would love to hear your opinions, comments, and statements.

19-year-old Taylor Mitchell, an up and coming Canadian folk and country singer was killed after being attacked by coyotes while hiking in a park.  Apparently Ms. Mitchell was hiking alone when she was attacked by two coyotes.  Other hikers in the area heard her screams and summoned rescuers who arrived quickly; they wounded one coyote but both ran away.  Ms. Mitchell was immediately air-lifted for emergency treatment but she did not survive her injuries.  Biologists believe that this was an isolated attack and they explain that coyotes are usually shy.  RIP – Taylor Mitchell.

The families of three Americans apprehend in Iran say freshly released videos affirm their loved ones were on vacation and had no clandestine motives when they navigated into the country from Iraq. Josh Fattal, 27, Sarah Shourd, 31, and Shane Bauer, 27, have been restrained in Iran since the 31st of July. Their families say they entered the Islamic Republic by mistake while hiking in a scenic area of northern Iraq. The families, who have had no contact with the detainees at all, absolved videos shot of them singing and dancing before they were conquered by Iranian authorities. Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki announced last week that investigators are still questioning the three and that their fate rests within judicial authorities. Bauer, Shourd and Fattal have been visited by Swiss diplomats, who survey U.S. interests in Iran. Mottaki gave no more details on the case. But his comments advised that formal charges could still be a possibility against the Americans, although Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said in an interview that he could request the judiciary to “take a look at the case with maximum leniency.” If you would like to read more about this story, you can click here.
